Elks Care, Elks Share. Are YOU an Elk?

Elks Lodges bring so much more to their communities than just a building, golf course or pool. They are places where neighbors come together, families share meals, and children grow up.

Elks invest in their communities through programs that help children grow up healthy and drug-free, by undertaking projects that address unmet need, and by honoring the service and sacrifice of our veterans.
– Elks in Alexandria, Va., hold a soup kitchen at the Lodge each weekday at lunch, serving 30 people, many of whom are veterans.
– Wheeling, W.Va., Elks Lodge hosts local youth once a week for a wholesome meal. They also provide homework help and invite community leaders to speak at the meals.
– Elks in Lockport, N.Y., provide an annual weeklong summer camp tailored to meet the needs of people with disabilities.

As a non-profit 501(c3) organization, the mission of the Brookings Harbor Community Theater is to  “inspire, educate, and entertain children and families through the experience of quality theater both on and off stage.”

We provide children, families, and adults a safe and creative environment, where all are encouraged to explore theatrical character development, along with personal growth and appreciation for the cultural arts.

The objective of rehearsing and presenting a BHCT theater production is to provide children with opportunities to build essential life skills, friendships, and great memories, alongside their parents, siblings, and the many members of our theater community.

Brookings Harbor Community Theater is a collaborative effort involving many people with a variety of talents. We find that families who benefit most from all that BHCT has to offer are those who see volunteering at the theater as quality time spent together in a fun, imaginative and mutually rewarding environment.

Our food bank assists families in the Brookings area who are without food. Each month we distribute a box of nutritional food to individuals and families, for three to five days of meals.

The Brookings Harbor Food Bank was established in 1984 by a group of citizens who recognized a need to assist hungry families. The food bank was originally in a local church’s hall, then over the years made three more moves to larger spaces. In 2006 a property within the city limits of Brookings was donated to the food bank. Through generous donations from local residents and grants from The Ford Family Foundation and The Collins Foundation, the food bank was able to construct a state-of-the-art distribution warehouse, a long standing dream come true. Lease payments, or mortgage payments were no longer necessary. Those savings are now applied to food purchases.

The Food Bank strives to maintain our client’s dignity by offering a shopping style system whereby each person chooses the products that are needed for individual situations. The system not only empowers the client, it allows the food bank to operate on a zero-waste concept.

With generous product and monetary donations from individuals, clubs, churches and businesses, and with food drives conducted by local organizations and schools, the food bank still finds it necessary to spend in the neighborhood of $20,000 – $30,000 per year in food purchases.  These statistics illustrate the continuing need for assistance from the community. Without this assistance the food bank would no longer be able to help the families who need A HAND UP, NOT A HAND OUT.

Friends of Music, a non-profit organization, promotes interest in musical expression and enhances the cultural climate of the region by presenting classical music programs and promoting other musical genres throughout the year. We encourage, guide and provide tools to novice, student, and under-privileged community members to participate in a variety of performing arts activities by making educational, out-reach and scholarship opportunities available. Friends of Music took shape in 1985 when a group of music lovers along the southern Oregon and northern California coast decided to pool efforts and resources to bring high quality musical performances to the area. Over the years Friends of Music has grown and prospered. The artists coming to the Brookings venue have continued to provide concert audiences with superb performances. Friends of Music not only present concerts featuring internationally known and regionally acclaimed artists, the organization also sponsors mini-concerts for schools and promotes the Curry/Del Norte Orchestra Guild and the Curry/Del Norte Orchestra. Tickets are now available for the 2017/2018 live performances. Visit our website for a full listing of the entire season of world class performances held in beautiful Brookings, Oregon. The Brookings Harbor Scholarship Foundation (BHSF) provides scholarships and grants to graduates of Brookings-Harbor High School. Awards are based on demonstrated leadership and co-curricular activities, academics and need, and are funded by donations from individuals, businesses, service clubs and class alumni.

The BHSF was established in 1992 to help local students achieve their dreams of further higher education by providing financial assistance through the award of scholarships and grants to local graduating seniors and alumni. In 2015 we hit a major financial milestone and awarded over $205,000 in scholarship awards to 67 students in our County. With donor support, we can continue to grow and increase the level of financial support to area young people to help them realize their full potential and keep up with the ever escalating costs of higher education.

We could not fulfill our mission without the generous support of donors who support what we do by making annual, periodic, or sustaining gifts of any size, or who choose to include BHSF in personal estate plans, thereby leaving a lasting legacy to benefit future generations of students.

The Del Norte County and tribal lands (DNATL) Building Healthy Communities initiative is a collaborative of residents, community organizations, and service providers that are working together to make DNATL the model of a healthy rural community. The Del Norte County and tribal lands (DNATL) area includes approximately 29,000 people and is located in the northwest corner of California. The DNATL BHC site includes four federally-recognized tribes: Elk Valley Rancheria, Resigini Rancheria,Tolowa Dee-ni’ Nation, and the Yurok Tribe.

Despite the abundant natural resources, DNATL is facing many challenges, including high rates of substance abuse, low rates of high school graduation and post-secondary degrees, and high unemployment. It is against these odds that residents and other stakeholders are coming together to create a healthier DNATL—a charge being led in large part by the youth.

DNATL believes children should dream about their futures—and those dreams should be framed by family, health, safety, economic security, education, and hope. Their dreams are the community responsibility and early intervention and prevention are the critical keys to strengthening families, ensuring the economic assets of the families, preventing families from entering the justice and child welfare systems, instilling a life-long love of learning, and enhancing the health of every resident.

SNAP-Ed (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program- Education) is a collaborative partnership between the USDA, The California Endowment, and the Network for a Healthy California supporting nutrition education and obesity prevention for CalFresh recipients and eligibles. To achieve our goal, we specifically focus on increasing fruit and vegetable consumption, increasing physical activity levels, increasing food security and preventing diet-related chronic diseases.
